The first three questions refer to the material you were to read in preparation for the lesson. Questions one and two require you to write a three or four sentence response. Number three is a multiple choice question. Click in the appropriate circle. Questions 4 is your opportunity to suggest what we should emphasize today and how.

1. When you ride in a vehicle that is making a turn your body feels pushed outward. Reconcile this fact with the physics statement that the real acceleration of your body (and therefore the real force on your body, called the centripetal force) is inward toward the center of curvature of the turn.

2. The Spin and Puke Maneuver. Pilots can routinely encounter up to 9 g's during maneuvers. They need a way to practice this without risking their life or their plane. The centrifuge simulates a high-G environment by spinning around rapidly. The pilot steps inside of the centrifuge gondola (large square chamber shown below) and is strapped into an aircraft seat. The centrifuge then starts spinning, slowly at first, and then very rapidly. Given the centrifuge data below, estimate the acceleration the pilot is subjected to.
Data:

  • Radius of centrifuge spinning arm is 5 meters
  • Typical time for one revolution during a training run 2 seconds

3. A car can barely negotiate an unbanked turn at 40 feet/sec if the radius of the turn is 100 ft. To make the road safe for the same car driving at 80 ft/s, the radius of the turn would have to be

  1. increased to 200 ft
  2. increased to 400 ft
  3. decreased to 50 ft
  4. decreased to 25 ft

4. Below is a space for your thoughts, including general comments about today's assignment (what seemed impossible, what reading didn't make sense, what we should spend class time on, what was "cool", etc.):
